Rebates + incentives

What a battery really costs.

Two government programs take a meaningful slice off a home battery in NSW, and a third keeps solar panels cheaper than the sticker price. We apply them on your quote, so you see the lower price before you sign.

Estimate

Slide to your battery size.

The federal battery discount at each size, worked out the way the government does it, and how much of your battery counts towards the NSW VPP incentive. Your quote confirms the exact figures for your property and install date.

A typical home sits between 9 and 27 kWh
Federal · Cheaper Home Batteries≈$3,367Taken off your quote at point of sale.
NSW · VPP connection incentive13.5 kWhRoughly the capacity it's calculated on (NSW counts 90% of the rated capacity). Taken off your Ausave quote upfront when you agree to join ZEROHERO.

Estimates only, as at October 2026. The federal figure uses the government's rate for batteries installed and signed off by 31 December 2026 (it falls after that) and the value we currently pass on for the certificates, which moves with the market. Usable capacity is the figure on the Clean Energy Council's approved battery list, which the federal discount uses. The NSW incentive counts 90% of the battery's rated (nominal) capacity on that list instead, which can differ a little, and depends on certificate prices, so we show roughly the capacity it's calculated on. We confirm exact figures on your written quote.

What's available

Three programs, one quote.

They stack. A home anywhere from Newcastle to Tamworth adding solar and a battery can use all three at once, and we handle the paperwork.

Federal · batteries

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

An upfront discount of around 30% on a new battery, or on 5 kWh or more of extra capacity added to a battery that hasn't had the discount before. Paid through small-scale technology certificates, which we create and trade on your behalf.

  • Batteries from 5 kWh, installed with new or existing solar
  • Full rate on the first 14 kWh of usable capacity, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh
  • Set by the date your battery is signed off, and legislated to step down every six months to 2030
  • Households, businesses and community organisations, no income test

NSW · virtual power plants

NSW VPP connection incentive

A one-off incentive from the NSW Government when you connect your battery to a recognised virtual power plant, under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme. Ausave takes it off your quote upfront when you join GloBird's ZEROHERO.

  • Batteries from just over 2 kWh to 50 kWh, calculated on usable capacity up to 28 kWh
  • Stacks with the federal battery discount
  • The VPP agreement must stay in place for at least 12 months
  • Can't be claimed again for a battery that has already received it
Federal · solar panels

Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme

The long-running solar rebate. New systems up to 100 kW earn certificates based on their size and location, which come straight off the price of your panels.

  • New solar systems up to 100 kW
  • Panels and inverter must be Clean Energy Council approved
  • Reduces each year as the scheme winds down to 2030
  • Installed by an accredited installer, which we are

The clock

The support steps down, not up.

The federal battery discount is legislated to fall every six months until it ends, and it is locked in by the date your battery is installed and signed off, not the date you sign.

  1. JUL 2025

    Program opens

    Federal battery discount begins.

  2. MAY 2026

    New rates and tiers

The rate per kWh drops again (it first fell in January), and capacity above 14 kWh earns less.

  3. JUL 2026

    NSW widens eligibility

Batteries from just over 2 kWh up to 50 kWh qualify for the NSW VPP incentive.

  4. JAN 2027

    Next step down

Certificates for new solar drop by about a fifth, and the federal battery discount falls again, then steps down every six months.

  5. DEC 2030

    Federal programs end

The federal battery discount and the solar certificate scheme are scheduled to close. The NSW VPP incentive has no set end date.

How we handle it

Nothing to chase after the install.

Rebates are claimed by the installer, which means the quality of the paperwork depends on the quality of the installer. Ours is done in-house, on time, every time.

  1. 01

We check what you qualify for.

Property, existing system, switchboard and battery size all affect eligibility. We confirm it at the site visit.

  2. 02

The discounts appear on your quote.

Each program is a separate line, so you can see what the system costs before and after incentives.

  3. 03

We finish the paperwork after switch-on.

We create the federal certificates for you. If you're joining ZEROHERO, we help you complete the sign-up on installation day; forward us GloBird's welcome email and we finalise your NSW incentive paperwork.
