Solar

Certificates now reach 1 MW.

Business, farm and community solar earns federal certificates that cut the upfront cost. Solar over 100 kW and up to 1 MW switched on from 1 October 2026 now qualifies too, with claims expected to open in mid-to-late November.

Small-scale solar

Business, farm and community rooftops up to 100 kW earn certificates based on the system’s size and location, which come straight off the price of the panels.

  • Solar already on the site can count toward the 100 kW, depending on how it is connected and metered. If the total goes over 100 kW, the new panels come under the mid-scale rules instead
  • Panels and inverter must be Clean Energy Council approved
  • Reduces each year as the scheme winds down to 2030
  • Installed by an accredited installer, which we are

Federal · mid-scale solar

Solar over 100 kW, up to 1 MW

Solar systems over 100 kW and up to 1 MW that are switched on from 1 October 2026 can now earn small-scale technology certificates, which cut the upfront cost. Before this, the certificates stopped at 100 kW.

  • Businesses, farms, schools and community buildings, connected to the grid or off-grid
  • New systems, or new panels added to an existing system, switched on from 1 October 2026. Only the new panels earn certificates. Other solar on the same site or a site next door, including an accredited solar power station, can count toward the 1 MW limit, depending on how it is connected and metered
  • Clean Energy Council approved panels and inverters, installed by an accredited installer, with planning and network approvals in place
  • Unlike smaller systems, the support doesn’t step down each year: it stays the same for systems installed up to the end of 2030
  • The Clean Energy Regulator expects to start taking claims in mid-to-late November 2026

A NSW discount and the federal battery discount can both apply, depending on the battery’s size and the site. We size the battery to your daytime load and confirm what applies on your quote.

NSW business battery discount

Since 1 September 2026, the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme has offered a discount on new batteries at business sites. The NSW Government puts it at about 20–30% off a battery on its own, or 30–40% when it goes in with enough new solar.

BESS4Business batteriesOver 20 kWh, up to 200 kWh usable
Shops, offices, factories, farms, schools, councils and community buildings. The battery’s size decides the category, not the size of the business.
BESS5Larger business batteriesOver 200 kWh usable
Commercial, industrial and agricultural sites, with batteries up to 30 MWh. The discount is calculated on the first 10 MWh.

For these NSW discounts, usable capacity is 90% of the battery’s rated (nominal) capacity, so a battery rated at 100 kWh counts as 90 kWh.

  • The battery must be new, installed behind the meter at a grid-connected site and able to be controlled remotely. Off-grid sites, homes and data centres aren’t eligible, and a shed or garage on the same site as a house may not be either. Joining a virtual power plant isn’t required
  • Solar is optional. New solar installed within 90 days before or after the battery earns a higher discount, but it must be at least a quarter of the battery’s usable capacity (for example 25 kW of new panels for 100 kWh usable), so we design the two together
  • One claim per site, ever, so it pays to size the battery right the first time
  • For batteries up to 200 kWh, the business pays at least $5,000 ex GST toward the installation
  • For larger batteries, NSW says the discount may come through a different arrangement than a simple upfront discount
  • Can be combined with federal solar certificates on the new panels and, for batteries up to 100 kWh rated, with the federal battery discount, where both programs’ rules are met

Federal · batteries

Federal battery discount

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program isn’t just for homes. Businesses and community organisations can get it on batteries of 5 to 100 kWh (rated capacity) installed with new or existing solar of up to 100 kW. A battery added to solar over 100 kW that was installed before 1 October 2026 doesn’t qualify. For new solar over 100 kW, we confirm eligibility on your quote.

  • Calculated on the first 50 kWh of usable capacity: full rate on the first 14 kWh, 60% from 14 to 28 kWh and 15% from 28 to 50 kWh
  • Set by the date the battery is signed off, and legislated to step down every six months to 2030
  • If it’s connected to the grid, or off-grid but within 1 km of it, the battery generally must be able to join a virtual power plant, though it doesn’t have to
  • Off the grid, it only qualifies at a home someone lives in, such as a farmhouse. Off-grid sheds, pumps and business buildings don’t
  • One battery system per premises can get the discount
  • Can be combined with the NSW business battery discount where both programs’ rules are met

NSW · apartment buildings

Shared batteries for strata buildings

Since 1 September 2026, NSW has also offered a discount on a new shared battery for an apartment building, supplying common areas or several apartments. The NSW Government puts it at about 20–30% off the cost of installing a battery on its own, or about 30–40% when new or additional solar goes in with it.

BESS3Apartment buildingsOver 20 kWh, up to 200 kWh usable
A shared battery, installed outdoors, for an apartment building with four or more apartments, approved by a vote of the owners corporation. Townhouse complexes generally don’t qualify.

For these NSW discounts, usable capacity is 90% of the battery’s rated (nominal) capacity, so a battery rated at 100 kWh counts as 90 kWh.

  • The battery must be new, installed behind the meter and able to be controlled remotely. Joining a virtual power plant isn’t required
  • New solar installed within 90 days before or after the battery earns a higher discount, with no minimum size. Solar paid for by a NSW Government grant doesn’t count towards it
  • One claim per site, so it pays to size the battery right the first time
  • The owners corporation pays at least $1,000 ex GST toward the installation
  • Can be combined with federal solar certificates on new panels and, for batteries up to 100 kWh rated, with the federal battery discount, where both programs’ rules are met

The clock

Timing matters.

Certificates for solar up to 100 kW drop each January to 2030, mid-scale solar support holds steady to the end of 2030, the federal battery discount steps down every six months, and the NSW battery discounts have no set end date.

  4. JAN 2027

    Next step down

Certificates for new solar up to 100 kW drop by about a fifth, and the federal battery discount falls again, then steps down every six months.

  5. DEC 2030

    Federal programs end

Federal solar certificates and the battery discount are scheduled to close. Mid-scale systems need to be installed by then.

How we handle it

From site visit to final paperwork.

Bigger projects come with more approvals and more paperwork. We run them in-house, from the first site visit to the final certificates.

  1. 01

    We assess the site.

Roof or ground space, switchboard, network connection and your daytime load all shape the system and what it qualifies for. We check them at the site visit.

  2. 02

The incentives appear on your quote.

Each program is a separate line, with its conditions spelled out, so you can see the cost before and after incentives.

  3. 03

We handle the approvals and paperwork.

Planning and network approvals, the federal certificates and, for batteries, the NSW discount through an accredited certificate provider.
